Which ant it is changes everything. Carpenter ants excavate structural timber; pavement ants are a nuisance. The same spray does not deal with both.

The first question is always the species. Carpenter ants nest inside wood, preferring timber that has been damp at some point, and over time they hollow out galleries that weaken it. Pavement ants nest outdoors under slabs and paths and come inside to forage. Odorous house ants do much the same and are often mistaken for something worse. The damage potential, and therefore the treatment, is completely different.

A visible trail is useful information rather than the problem itself. Ants follow chemical trails to a resource, so the line of ants across a worktop is a route to something, and following it back is how the nest gets located. Spraying the trail removes the visible ants and leaves the nest producing more, which is why the same trail reappears in the same place days later.

For carpenter ants the inspection also looks for the moisture that made the timber attractive in the first place: a leaking gutter line, a failed flashing, a deck ledger board, a window sill that has been wet for years. Treating the ants without addressing that tends to buy a season rather than a solution.
