Pest Control in Newtown Square, PA
Newtown Square is not a borough: it is a village and the post office name for Newtown Township in Delaware County, where a 1742 tavern still stands near new townhome construction.

Pest Control in Newtown Square
Newtown Square is a village and the post office name for Newtown Township, a second class township in Delaware County. So your mail says Newtown Square while the government you actually deal with is the township. The township covers 10.09 square miles and recorded 15,002 residents at the 2020 census. Crum Creek forms the western border, Darby Creek runs through the northeast corner, and the 391 acre Springton Lake reservoir borders the township to the south. Settlement began in 1681 with mostly Welsh Quakers, farming ran through the eighteenth century, and mills worked both of those creeks in the nineteenth.
Eastern subterranean termites are native to Pennsylvania and found throughout the state, and winged swarms usually emerge between February and June. The state DEP puts the greatest risk of a tick bite in spring, summer and fall, from a nymph or adult female. Blacklegged tick adults use forest edge habitat and understory vegetation, and the larvae are found in leaf litter. Every one of Pennsylvania's 67 counties has reported Lyme disease in the state Health Department's annual surveillance. Delaware County was named in the spotted lanternfly quarantine order of May 26, 2018, and the state says all residents and businesses must comply.

Questions, answered
Is Newtown Square its own borough, or is it part of a township?
It is not a borough: Newtown Square is a village and the post office name for Newtown Township, a second class township in Delaware County. The 2020 census counted 15,002 residents in the township, which covers about 10.1 square miles. The township also takes in the villages of Echo Valley, Florida Park, Wyola and part of Larchmont. That matters when you look up local rules, because your municipality is Newtown Township even when your mail says Newtown Square.
Do the new townhomes and apartments at Ellis Preserve get pest problems too?
New construction is not the same thing as sealed construction, and pests find that out before you do. Ellis Preserve is the redevelopment of the former Charles E. Ellis School campus on West Chester Pike in Newtown Square. It now holds townhomes, apartments, offices, retail space and two hotels on the same historic property. On buildings like these the openings that matter are weep holes, utility penetrations, garage door thresholds and sliding door tracks. Ants, mice and spiders use those openings in brand new buildings as readily as they do in old ones.
Where are the ticks around my Newtown Square property actually coming from?
Mostly the wooded creek corridors: Crum Creek forms the western boundary of the township and Darby Creek runs through the northeast corner. Crum Creek is impounded south of the township as Springton Lake Reservoir, a 391 acre water supply created in 1931. Those shaded banks are the forest edge habitat that blacklegged ticks sit in while they wait for a host. State surveillance puts the greatest bite risk in spring, summer and autumn, from either a nymph or an adult female. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded Lyme disease cases in all 67 counties in the state. Treatment works the leaf litter edge where your lawn meets woods, not the open middle of the lawn.
Is Delaware County still under the Pennsylvania spotted lanternfly quarantine, and what does it restrict?
Yes: the quarantine order of 26 May 2018 named 13 counties including Delaware and Chester, and the quarantine has since been extended across most of the state. The order restricts moving items that can carry egg masses out of the zone, and the state's list of those items is long. It includes firewood, logs and tree parts, nursery stock, construction waste, grills, outdoor furniture and vehicles that are not stored indoors. Pennsylvania says that both residents and businesses have to comply with the order and its regulations. Before you tow anything out of the driveway, check the wheel wells and the frame for egg masses.
