Mosquito Control for Pennsylvania Yards
Mosquitoes breed in standing water measured in tablespoons, not ponds. Finding those sites on your property matters more than how much of the yard gets treated.
Standing water restarts the cycle after every treatment
Mosquitoes complete their cycle in standing water in about a week. One untouched plant saucer or blocked gutter will repopulate a treated yard, which is why the water sources matter as much as the treatment.

Mosquito Control
Mosquitoes breed in standing water measured in tablespoons, not ponds. Finding those sites on your property matters more than how much of the yard gets treated.
A mosquito does not need a pond. A blocked gutter, a plant pot saucer, a tarpaulin fold, a corrugated downspout extension, a child's toy left upside down or the water in a bird bath is enough. Because the larvae develop in that water, the sites on and immediately around your property are what determine how many adults you are dealing with, regardless of what the neighbors have.
That makes the survey the useful part of the visit. The technician walks the property looking for water that holds for more than a few days, and a good part of the result comes from removing or treating those sites rather than from spraying foliage. Where a site cannot be drained, such as a rain barrel or a drainage feature, there are treatments that target the larvae specifically.
Adult treatment has its place, particularly on the shaded, humid resting sites mosquitoes use during the day: under decks, in dense low planting, along fence lines and behind sheds. Combining that with removing the breeding water is what makes an evening in the garden usable again.

Questions, answered
How little water do mosquitoes need to breed?
Less than most people expect. A bottle cap of water can hold larvae, and a blocked gutter or a plant saucer is more than enough. This is why the survey looks for anything holding water for several days rather than only for obvious features like ponds.
Does treating my yard help if my neighbor does nothing?
It helps, because most of the mosquitoes biting you are likely breeding close by, and removing the sites on your own property removes that production. It is not a force field: adults do travel. Managing your own breeding sites and resting areas is still the part with the biggest effect.
When should treatment start in Pennsylvania?
Activity generally builds as temperatures rise in spring and continues into autumn. Starting before you are already being bitten every evening puts you ahead of the population curve rather than chasing it. Call and ask what timing makes sense for your property this year.
