Mouse and Rat Control in Southeastern Pennsylvania

Trapping handles the rodents already inside. Finding and sealing the entry point is what decides whether you are doing this again in six weeks.

Mice do not wait for you to decide

A house mouse reaches breeding age in about six weeks, so what looks like one mouse in the basement is a population by the end of a season. The droppings and the gnawing spread with it.

Rodent Control

Trapping handles the rodents already inside. Finding and sealing the entry point is what decides whether you are doing this again in six weeks.

A house mouse can pass through a gap of roughly a quarter of an inch, which is smaller than most people picture and smaller than most gaps anyone would think to close. Utility penetrations, the gap under a garage door, an unscreened dryer vent, a rotted section of sill plate, or the space where a pipe enters a fieldstone foundation are all normal routes. Older Main Line housing has more of them than newer construction does.

This is why the trapping and the sealing are two halves of one job rather than alternatives. Trapping without sealing removes the current occupants and leaves the route open. Sealing without trapping can leave animals shut inside a wall cavity. Doing them in the right order, and knowing which order that is for your building, is most of the skill.

Droppings, gnaw marks on packaging, a faint ammonia smell in a cabinet, or scratching that moves along a ceiling line at dusk all point the same way. The technician will identify whether it is mice or rats, which changes both the trapping and the exclusion work, then show you the entry points that need closing.

Who it is for

Anyone hearing movement in a wall or ceiling, finding droppings in a cabinet, or seeing gnawed packaging..

What you get

  • Entry points identified and shown to you, not just treated around
  • Mice and rats are distinguished first, because the exclusion work differs
  • Trapping and sealing sequenced so nothing is closed in
  • Attic and crawl space checked, since that is where the route usually starts

Questions, answered

How small a gap can a mouse actually use?

About a quarter of an inch, which is roughly the width of a pencil. That is why sealing work focuses on utility penetrations, vents, door sweeps and foundation gaps rather than obvious holes. If you can slide a pencil into it, treat it as an entry point.

Will bait alone fix it?

Bait can reduce numbers, but on its own it tends to produce a cycle: the population drops, the route stays open, and it climbs again. It also carries a risk of a rodent dying somewhere inaccessible. Bait has a place as part of a plan that includes exclusion, and the technician will explain where it is and is not appropriate for your property.

I only hear them at night. Is that normal?

Yes. Mice and rats are mostly nocturnal, so activity at dusk and overnight is the usual pattern and hearing nothing during the day means very little. Seeing one in daylight can indicate a larger population, because it suggests competition for space and food.
